Airbus' latest Global Market Forecast (GMF), released July 8 ahead of Farnborough, projects 42,060 new passenger aircraft deliveries between 2026 and 2045 as global revenue passenger kilometers roughly double to 21.3 trillion. That figure represents a modest downward revision from last year's forecast of 43,400 deliveries through 2044, suggesting Airbus is tempering its long-term optimism slightly even as it maintains a fundamentally bullish outlook. The forecast rests on two pillars: continued expansion of long, thin routes connecting secondary cities—bypassing traditional mega-hub connections—and an accelerating need to replace aging fleets. Notably, 55% of city pairs flown in 2025 didn't exist two decades ago, and 532 airports have entered the scheduled network since 2005, underscoring how much of the industry's growth is coming from route diversification rather than simply adding frequency on existing trunk routes.
For working pilots, this forecast signals where career opportunities and operational realities are heading over the next two decades. The emphasis on thin, long-haul routes—enabled by extended-range variants of the A350 (+1,900 nm), A321XLR (+2,500 nm), A330neo (+3,000 nm), and A220 (+600 nm)—means more single-aisle and small-widebody aircraft flying missions that once required larger jets on hub-to-hub networks. This has direct implications for pilot staffing models, as airlines increasingly need crews qualified on aircraft capable of stretching duty periods and range on point-to-point service to secondary markets in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The A220's potential to unlock 400-plus new thin routes in North America, Europe, and Africa also reinforces a broader trend already visible at regional and mainline carriers: smaller, efficient jets taking on route structures previously dominated by larger narrowbodies, changing the calculus for pilot bidding, base assignments, and international operating experience earlier in a career.
The fleet-replacement dynamic is equally significant operationally. Airbus data shows that just 53% of the global fleet was under 10 years old in 2025, down from 63% in 2015, while the 11-to-20-year-old segment grew from 29% to 35%. This aging trend—driven partly by pandemic-era deferrals and ongoing supply chain constraints at both Airbus and Boeing—means pilots at many carriers will continue flying older airframes longer than historical norms, with implications for maintenance reliability, dispatch rates, and the pace of cockpit technology upgrades. Nearly half of projected deliveries through 2045 (47%) are earmarked purely for replacement rather than growth, which should eventually ease this pressure, but the near-term reality is a fleet mix skewing older than it has in over a decade.
Airbus' commentary on resilience through geopolitical disruption—Russia-Ukraine, the U.S.-Israel-Iran conflict, and the resulting dip in Middle East carrier operations since February—also matters to crews navigating volatile airspace and routing decisions. The acknowledgment that airlines are diversifying fuel sourcing and rerouting strategies reflects operational adaptations pilots have already been living through in dispatch releases and route planning. With Boeing's competing forecast due before Farnborough, the industry will get a fuller picture of how the two major OEMs view demand, but Airbus' framing—thin routes, range-extended variants, and urgent fleet renewal—suggests both manufacturers will be selling not just aircraft, but a vision of a more fragmented, point-to-point global network that pilots and operators alike will need to plan around for training pipelines, route qualifications, and long-term fleet planning.
